rebuild carb or get a weber? 1272cc

Post

i really am a novice when it comes to carbs so i'm a little out of my depth.

car is currently running very poor at idle, quite a bit of fuel smell in and out of the car.
i can see leakage from some areas (gaskets) on the carb,

adjusting the fast idle screw doesn't seem to make any difference. having to pull out choke at junctions.

i hear a few folk saying get a weber but then i hear others saying they couldn't get them running right.

i'm up in inverness and help is pretty thin on the ground up here.

all garages want to do these day is plug a car into the computer.

any advice?

I think I would get the weber, the original carb even if a good model is how many years old,

strip it and clean it, sounds like your idle jet is blocked, by pulling the choke you are lifting the revs above idle and it's running on the main jet.

a new set of gaskets shouldn't be an issue (if they arn't available gasket paper is dirt cheap, so are cornflake packets).

for the sake of a few hours and some paper you could see a massive improvement without the need to outlay the 200 notes a weber will cost you.  yes the carb is 30+ years old now, but they dont have that many moving parts to wear out.

I have paper here already, I think I'll give it a go.

Where's the main idle jet?

I checked the one opposite side of fast idle screw, it was clean as a whistle.

I just bit the bullet and took it to bits.

I found half a beach in the float chamber,
Cleaned all the jets, made a new gasket which fitted like a dream.

Stuck it all back together and something very strange happened.

IT STARTED !

Although not perfect it runs a LOT better.
Doesn't cut out a junction etc..which is a big weight off my shoulders.

Well done, may have been the mixture that needs adjusting too. The weber will licence up the car a bit and it's worthwhile keeping an eye on ebay, one will come up sooner or later.

my first thought was how does so much grit and sand get in the float chamber in the first place, how does it get past the filter????

smaller particles than the filter.

glad you got to going better.
did you set the float height whilst in there?
with everything cleaned out it will need a few other jobs doing.
firstly make sure the engine is timed correctly.
set the tickover to 1000 rpm (they will run happy at 800 but this can be done once setup)
wind the mixture screw in till the engine wants to stall, open it back out till it stops and doesn't hunt anymore.
now set the tick over down too around 800-900, if it stays running without wanting to cut out you are done, if not lift the tick over slightly.

now recheck your timing and go for a drive in the sun.

the weber wont make any difference if your carb is setup correctly.

worth a punt if you want to get the best from the carb you have on.

checked the timing, its bang on.got the idle set to 1000.

how do i set the float height?
it looked like just a pin and a clip, nothing else.

the particles in the float chamber certainly looked too big to pass through a filter.

thanks for your advice

dont know for the specific carb, I'll have a look in the green book later, if it's running ok now then leave them alone, they don't tend to drift much.  get the mixture set and you are good to go.
