Real Rivage?

Post

Hi guys and gals.  I'm thinking about getting another Mk1 Golf and have come across this:
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201407205967063/sort/default/usedcars/page/1/postcode/bn32pq/make/volkswagen/keywords/rivage/model/golf/radius/1501/onesearchad/used%2Cnearlynew%2Cnew?logcode=p
I'm a little confused…the engine bay doesn't look like a gti to me, or is this how the later gti's are?  I thought Rivage's had the golf gti badge at the back rather than the golf cabriolet.  So I'm wondering if this is actually a sheep in wolf's clothing.  Just wanted to clarify before giving it a look.

Thanks in advance :)

has the digifant gti engine, pretty rare! has all the expensive cream leather rivage parts so even if it isnt a 'real' one, ifd be happy enough to buy it if i wanted a rivage

Rubjohnny will know better than me but on a J plate, I thought it would be the normal GTI engine as they were made until L reg.

Great mileage but for 52k miles the drivers seat looks well worn on the bolster as does the steering wheel.

If its all original with the low miles then its well worth is money IMO.

the late ones could be either kjet or digi, there doesnt seem to be any rule over which it has fitted. same goes for the sportlines of a similar age

Same engine as my sportline, nice engines.  If you do look at it check for being an import as it seems a little early for a uk digi engine.  It may have a cat which will draw back the power output a bit but on a Jplate it's not needed as these engines are well within emissions without them. As said above it does have a little more wear than you'd expect for a car of that mileage but if it all checked out its very good for the money especially for the leather options.

I think it's a Classicline, possibly specced as RHD from new and imported from Europe or converted once it's come to the UK.

If you look at the info on Autotrader its showing as first registered in 2000.

A quick check on www.vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk also shows it as 1st registered 1 May 2000. That would tally with the part history too, there's probably not much paperwork for it pre-2000.

Not a bad looking car and quite rare over here but it's not a Rivage. Possibly worth the asking price if it's all in good condition.

Clocks are likely to have been swapped from KMH to MPH too so be wary of the mileage indicated.

Searching around and it does seem to be a classicline…the cabriolet badge instead of gti badge tallies with that.  So was the classicline the European version of the Rivage?

Pretty much yeah, there were a lot of special editions in Europe that weren't available here.

Double check on clocks, for all I know they might run RHD and mph in Switzerland so the mileage could be correct.

Otherwise it's likely to have been running kph clocks so could've had mph faces fitted (odo will still be counting km's), or someone fitted mph clocks.
Unless there's paper work for that then the mileage is anyone's guess. The converter could've fitted used clocks with existing miles, fitted clocks set at 0 miles at time of conversion or correctly converted the original reading from the km's over to the mph speedo.

at the end of the day in my view mileage is irrelevant, its the condition of the car that counts. the basic shell does look liek a nice low mileage. just look at the driver side chassis leg, and cylinder head tho oxidised a bit seems to have no oil leaks, original sticker on rocker cover to warn that you dont overfill oil as it = dead cat etc.

seats do look a bit worn but this is to be expected really, check the pedal rubbers and carpets in the footwells, paint in the boot etc

Completely agree, just pointing out that the mileage is likely to be incorrect so don't pay a premium for what appears to be low mileage.

I've just converted my T3 from kmh to mph whilst doing an engine conversion, I carried the mileage over from the Mk3 donor engine to the new clocks. It's a mish-mash but it's all documented.

Good luck if you go view it geejah.

exactly, i never look at mileage and just assume its had new clocks, been clocked or whatever. a well looked after car with 200k can be better than abused 50k!

seen soem 'mint low mileage' cars which look like they have been sat submerged in salt water for their whole lives. sellers still expect premium money…

over 3k is strong money for a cab and it does look good nick in the pics but this is something to judge for yourself when you see the car in person and inspect it all underneath :)

Is it a right hand drive, it looks to be.
As stated Leather options and trim, Le Castelette Wheels etc.
However no decals for the lower swage saying Rivage and the classicline was a left hooker for the Euro/yank markets.
I know Rivages lose there decals over the years as to where they sat get stone chipped, but classicline decals are higher up on the  front wings. Can't see anything on there.
Ask for the paint code as some of the clippers were L6U
whereas Classic and rivage are LC6U.
There are some oddities out there though..

You can't depend on decals either.
My mum bought a polo match years ago and the previous (1st owner) asked VW not to put the "match" decals on. They were still in the owners manual when my mum had it.
