Gearbox won't turn over by hand

Post

Hi,
I am installing a 5 speed box on my 1.3, from a polo mk2f {8p box)
Took the 4 speed box off today, and was planning on fitting the 5 speed tomorrow. However, I just tried to turn the 5 speed over by hand and then with a snug socket on the splined output. I cant get it to move. I can select through the gears using the linkage but it doesnt seem to want to turn over. Could this be because it has been sitting for a few months? It was sold as working. Should it free up when I start the engine?

Cheers
Rob

There might be resistance but it should turn.

Does the input shaft turn when its in neutral?

If there is oil in it then you'd expect that a few months wont cause it to seize up like that surely?
If you do manage to put it in then dont forget to fill it with oil when you take it out for a test drive like I did  :'(

Seems to work when bolted up. Not sure what was going on. If I turn the engine over by hand its fine! Ill try it properly tomorrow when I have some oil in it!

Filled it with oil and started her up.. there is a grind/whining noise in all gears and in neutral with the clutch out. Also appears to be leaking oil from around the passenger side drive shaft. Not pleased, need the car for next week and busy all weekend :'( Sounds to me like the input bearing has gone along with the drive shaft seal, but that may be jumping to conclusions. Oh I do have the worst luck  :(

:o  :P Thats not good news! Also if you have to put your old box back in then youll need a new mount too surely?

Got the 5 speed off now.. gunna put the old box back on.. luckily I hadn't got round to modifying the mount yet! Gunna possibly rebuild the box in the summer… or just strip it down to learn something :) Such a waste of time though, with A levels coming up etc.

Yeah I know how you feel, ive got to strip, polish and paint two more wheels and I just dont have the time but it also looks silly me just running the two I have on the front, but A levels are more important I guess
Thats a good job you didnt do the mount! I regret putting my 5 speed on anyway because it is only really useful on motorways which I dont use all that often anyway

Yeah I am debating not doing it now after what you said. Would prefer just dropping in a gt lump or a 1.4 16v, as it doesn't sound like the little 1.3 can pull it very well., and I wont be using it daily from september anyway providing everything goes to plan.. Decided that I cant just work with cars my whole life cos it would do my head in, so better do well in my a levels so I can go to uni   however, without a car I cant get to college so kinda need to put the gearbox back on  O_o

Yeah my plan is to get hold of a 1.4 16v because it seems fairly simple to put in
! Yeah thats the problem with have a mk1 as a daily, you can only do like a weekends worth of work on it and hope everything goes to plan!

I think i'll leave my engine alone for now.. fuel injection on the 1.3 block is a lot better than the solex carb that I had on there! Yeah true that! Ive got the carpets up and no seats in, and no gearbox on, gotta sort it all tomorrow ahhahh :/
