Just noticed a 3 Door CL 1272 cc on Ebay for sale, I thought the CL model was always 5 door ? and the Driver was 3 door with the 1272 cc engine, Interesting anyway anybody else out there own one of these.
 

I note the CL on ebay was not registered in UK until 1986.

I believe it might be an ex forces car, bought tax free in Germany before being imported to UK. Basically a right hand drive German spec car bought via the NAAFI.

I owned a 1977 3 door 1.6 GLS in Germany which I imported to UK in 1980.  My avatar photo is the said car, unfortunately I do not have it any more.

GLS models supplied in UK at the time were only 5 door.

if its anything like the MK2 the 'driver' doesnt exist as a factory car they leave the factory as a CL and are then brought over to the UK and all the driver trim added on top by the dealers

i believe if you look at the boot sticker on the mk2 driver the model is 'Golf CL' still even, assume the MK1 is the same. or not

but yeah as above if its a late register MK1 then it was probably bought by someone in the forces or living in germany. many MK1 are bought in germany them imported privately as back in the day it worked out cheaper to do so
