What is this?

As I'm a bit of a newbie in the mk1 golf world, can someone please enlighten me as to what this is bolted in the back of my car?
Looks like it's not original, it doesn't have a tow bar fitted either?

It look likes some kind of bracket for a towbar, to strengthen the mounting of it. There will be additional section(s) which replace the bumper frame too.

Well you've got me there because I've not seen anything like that before!  :o

Make a fool of myself but it does smack of some kind of antiquated strengthener (home made) to stop the bottom falling off when towing!  O_o

Humm.. It's very strange. The bolts don't look that old either. I've checked the rear panel and underneath for signs of holes for towbar fitting but nothing??
It def looks home made. Maybe that's as far as they ever got.

Maybe home-made anchorage for racing seat harnesses?

I thought some towbars had some kind of frame which went near/around the spare wheel well, and I'd say all towbars use the bumper mounting points too. Having said that, I had a towbar and it didn't have this internal bracket - I wonder if I should have?

Maybe a homemade bracer to stop its butt cheeks from squeezing together!  :$

I did wonder if it was someone's home made attempt,to stiffen the back end up but I can't see it doing much.
I have seen previous pictures of this car with a cage and harnesses, so maybe it something to do with that.
I'm going to remove it as its ugly and rusty.
