Hi

Little bit of advice and help required here please.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-GOLF-CLIPPER-CABRIO-CONVERTIBLE-MK1-NEW-MOT-LAST-OF-THE-80s-OLD-SCHOOL-/272370663035?hash=item3f6a8e7e7b%3Ag%3AmdAAAOSwaB5XlRS3&nma=true&si=X8TD9aLRFmD20pJDesO3pHiuKgw%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

Going to see the mk1 golf on the link above tomorrow morning, if you wouldn't mind copy and pasting into ebay.

Gent says that there is a little blow from the manifold not too worried as I probably would go stainless all the way through.

Mileage is 155,000 however there is no history, literally a log book and a MOT cert. He hasn't had it long wanted it for the summer and now wants to move it on. Although no history he says it is very clean both on the exterior and interior and that it must have had some love in its life. I know this means that certain things like the belt will have to be done immediately and i need to factor that in.

I saw the car advertised elsewhere for 2100 and it sold for 1600 on ebay the first time and 1200 ish the second time but apparently the winners made no contact, it had no reserve so that's what someone won it for, thus determining its value in my mind.

What do i need to look for have a printed copy of the guide from here, I am under no illusion and not expecting to see a new car.

Any input greatly received.

Luke

Check for rust really - check all the arches, sills, all the common area stuff. If you can get underneath it for a look. Check footwells for water and make sure the hood sits and closes well. It looks well in the pics.

Cheers Hugh.

A 'G' reg one should have the clipper kit bumpers and arches so this may have had a bit of a history……

Yup should have a clipper kit on it, therefore check the inner arch liners are still there and check the inside of the arches as they can collect mud and water and make the arches rust, or it protects them and they'll be like new

It may leak but it's a cabbie and many do. Check the vinyl hood isn't 'sticky' to the touch. Some get sticky when they get old. Will need replacing if it is.

Check if it's a weber or pier berg carb. If it's a pier erg they can get gummed up and cause problems, although Cluve has a pier erg and is the best performing carb model we've ever come across, as several GTIs have found out in the past.

At that price I'd take a chance.

On the first one -

The body kit came in for the 1988 model year (summer1987) but many didn't have it fitted due to lack of parts at the factory, by the time this was built though should have had it.

Have you looked at the MOT history, quite a few advisories some seem very picky and minor but nothing serious seems to keep getting flagged and the mileage has been very low over the last few years.

Change the wheels and it will look a whole lot nicer, why has it been marked as sold now though? Has he just took it off auction for you or have you won at that price subject to viewing?

For the blue one,

the seats and steering wheel aren't original - getting seats if you want to return to OEM would be difficult I think, can't remember ever seeing a blue interior.  Colour looks unusual but nothing to worry about, many cars were bought into UK at that time as personal imports giving access to a wider variety of European colours

For the final White one,

obviously more money but can't in my opinion beat a 20 year ownership history, can't find fault from the pictures apart from the Ronal alloys normally fitted to Audi 80's. and fact that it's an automatic which may not suit everyone should you look to resell, would have it for the original VW floor mats, been after a set of those for years!

The white one looks a much more sound buy in my opinion. It looks more original and in better order judging by the pics. Its more money of course but the old adage 'buy the best you can afford' springs to mind there. The blue one is less original and has had an extra six British winters to suffer through. I know a GL spec is rarer these days, but to me that doesn't necessarily make it more desirable.
