Mk1 loud to drive

Post

Hi,

I find my Mk1 loud to drive in terms of engine and road noise. Having not owned one before I don't no if this is the norm or not. I've had mk1 nova's in the past and from what I can remember they were quiet in comparison. . I should add that my car has been stripped to a bare shell all factory under seal and sound deadening removed and replaced with stone chip on the under side and after market sound deadening products on the factory locations on the inside. I wonder if this may be the cause. I'm interested to hear others opinions on this. And if anyone wants to pop past and take me for a spin in there mk1 so I have a comparison that wound be great :)

Thanks.

Are you running standard engine mounts? Poly engine mounts will make it very loud and unpleasant compared to standard

They certainly aren't a car you can get the kids to sleep in while driving home lol

If it's not the dashboard trying to rattle its way off its mounts it's the exhaust pipe droning on at the back, little bit of wind noise through the door seals but I still walk past the Range Rover sport and jump in it 👍🏻

Standard engine mounts in good condition. Although the engine does vibrate and move alot even when just ticking over. It's a 1.5 carb with 4 speed box.

Yeah I have the dash rattle. I have a standard exhaust so dont really notice the exhaust noise, its more the engine noise and road noise / wind noise that seem overly loud. Thanks for the advice.

Wind noise from doors?

What sound materials have you used?

Maybe use more ?

Why not go to a local meet and take someone out in it who also has one to compare?

Wind and general road / tyre noise. Unsure wethere its coming from the doors. The door have original vibration damping mats and the bulk and floor pan has aftermarket damping mats, ccf and mlv. I can always add more but then I will be covering areas of the car that werent covered from factory. I guess what I would like to know is would a loud driving experience be the norm for a factory Golf or do I have something else going on with mine. If its the norm then I will stop spending time and money trying to resolve it.

Local meet is a good idea. I will look into that. Thank you.

Realise this is an old threat but I've slowly been working through different things to make my mk1 more pleasant to drive. A lot of the noise, harness and vibration was coming from worn wheel bearings, loose dash clocks and surrounding dash trim and worn engine mounts. Now thee issues have been resolved the car is nicer to drive but I'm still getting excessive road / wind noise inside the car, this only happens at higher speeds and for example when driving on country lanes the noise is greatly reduced. I've described part of the noise as wind noise although I don't hear it whistle like through a window seal or changing pitch for example, its more a loud air born noise inside the car. Hope that makes sense. If anyone can help that would be great as its not a comfortable drive at the moment. I can't imagine that what I'm experiencing is just how mk1's are. Anyway of seeing if its the door seals without actually replacing them? The car is actually more comfortable to drive and the noise reduced with the window open.
