Find the factory spec

Post

Looking at restoring and want to know what spec the car was..

Hi all,

So I'm torn to whether or not to plough some pennies into myMk1 golf cab…

Little confusion of what engine and spec it left the factory with, it's a 1982 Mk1, and log book says it's a CL, which I'm lead to believe in 82, the CL was a GTI spec…

I know it's had some after market upgrades, and wondered if there is a way o finding the true original spec.

Everything in the car says GTI…. Just not sure if it had a full upgrade in its life…

It did have a respray circa 2000 is all I know.

Also, where do you stop with a non original car…

Hi Mike

CL wasn't GTI spec - not sure of exactly what it is though!

Check out the brochures section of the site, you may find enough info in the brochure downloads of how your car should have left the factory. The options code sticker will help too if you have that still?

Find the factory spec

You can get historic paperwork from the DVLA FORM V888.
Plus s birth certificate us available at a cost from Volkswagen too.
Build stickers as Hairy mentions  on the rear beam in the boot of cabbies have certain spec or option codes  so you can then look them up.

Cheers

CL just refers to the base spec as built at the factory, then you have all the extras added on as per whatever UK spec you ordered at the dealer.

For example the MK2 Driver over here isnt a factory spec its a UK spec, so its built as a 'Golf CL' at the factory, and the dealer add all the Driver trims to it.

whereas a GTI is a factory spec, so its built as a GTI at the factory and shipped out and is ready for sale as soon as it gets to the dealer (baring any options you specify from the catalogue and such)

So yes. If it was a GTI originally it would say GTI or GLI possibly on the sticker, not CL

I contacted VW Germany direct with details of my car - chassis number etc & they confirmed model, edition, production date engine spec…

Thanks rubjonny, I always assumed my Golf's birth certificate was printed wrong as it says CL, but the car is actually a GL, so this confirms it's not a mistake after all. I had considered paying for a new one but they're not cheap!

Thanks
