Convince me I've done the right thing!

Post

Hi guys, odd title I know but just looking for some reassurance lol

Im about to pick up a set of redrilled BBS RS wheels 7x15 et 41 to go on my long overdue cabby project and for some reason I'm a little nervous and I don't know why?? I've never had a set of wheels like these before and it's an expensive item to get-as my missus pointed out!
I justified it, as I had sold my Golf R32 seats to pay for them!

So have I made the right decision??

I would have preferred a slightly lower et. i think they may get very close to the strut especially if fitted with a proper sized tyre.

Post

Yeah a lower et would have been better but I'm running coilovers so hopefully I will have the clearance-if not I suppose I will have to get spacers and longer wheel bolts-not ideal :(

Go for it !!

I bought some rs001s a few weeks ago and couldn't face fitting them as they cost me a packet…

However, this happened last night and so I took some pics earlier!!!

I still can't believe I own a set!!, you won't regret it lol

I've got a tad of camber on mine and my rs001 are et25…so I fitted some
Hub buddies hub centric 15mm spacers from demon tweeks and they work perfectly and the car drives spot on!

If they look half as good as that green cabby, They'll look awesome

You have done the right thing, problem is now you have had these you wont ever want rep's or not as good quality wheels etc

If they are not fully built etc, just make sure you seal them up properly, as slow leaks on splits is a pain in the ar*e and will do your head in

Also after you have given them a good polish, invest in some good wheels sealant, should mean you will just need to wash them off every now and then. (speak to Dom @ shop n shine on here for detailing products) and will help protect them

Not a happy chap now :(  Just put the wheels on as a trial fit and unfortunately the difference between the original hub and the hub diameter on the BBS is different, basically there is a big gap which means the wheel is not central on the hub-about 9mm difference!  We also need to put a 15mm spacer on to clear the coilover strut which is then potentially going to cause problems when we put tyres on :(

Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do-apart from selling the wheels :(

Do you mean the central hole in the wheel is too big?  If so this isn't a problem you just need to know reg size of the whole on your wheel and then get spigot rings off e bay to reduce the size to 57.1mm I think.

Or do you mean something else?

Yeah that's right Richard. The problem is the guy who sold me the wheels doesn't know the previous car and the markings were machined off when they were redrilled! Is there any way to get an accurate measurement of the bore? They were previously 5x 114.3 stud pattern which narrows it down to a Japanese car I think but that's all I've got to go on :(

Take the wheels down to an alloy wheel place and they should be able to find you some spigot rings to fit…

I've got 15mm hub centric hub buddies spacers on mine to stance it out a bit and they work perfectly…

Right…finally getting somewhere with these wheels! Spigot reducer rings are sorted and work perfectly, I bunged on a 195/55/15 tyre as well to make sure I had the clearance to the coilovers and arch-which I don't have :(

I need to fit some 15mm spacers and then get some bolts which are 20mm longer than standard (to allow for the difference in the wheel thickness where the bolts sit, and the spacer thickness) Hope this is all making sense!

Ive seen those hub buddies spacers from Demon Tweeks, are they any good? I need them to fit over the original hub and flange but still have a flange that will sit inside the BBS wheels.

Good news

I've got 165:50/15 on mine.

Re the hub buddies spacers, I applied loads of grease before fitting them to the hub.

They were on for three days and I went to take them off. One got stuck so the mechanic slowly tried to ease it off with a screwdriver from the hub lip part and it broke!!!

I was straight on the phone to DT who apologised and sent me a replacement!…I wasn't impressed. The others came off easily, but I would just say that I was disappointed that it broke like that…

Eibach do some, and there's someone on eBay that does them, so there maybe some better quality ones out there.

Apart from that "minor" issue they've been fine and work very well, I get no vibration when driving at all…

Those pictures don't fill me with much confidence lol!

These are doing my head in now, found out they are RS 213, not sure if that's good or bad but hey ho.  One thing is that I have one different centre cap grrrr. I need one more with the part numbers 0924038 and 0924154 which is the waffle plate and black plastic screw thread. The one I have is a simple half twist fitting which typically does not work :(

Does anyone know where I can get these? I've looked on eBay and the only set I can find is £100 starting bid, I only need one! I'm about ready to throw the towel in and sell these wheels now :(

What about German eBay or the edition 38 forum?

Re the spacers I guess things just aren't made as good these days.

Maybe try some eibach ones

Right, after what seems like a long time I'm almost there with the wheels! Lips are polished and the wheels have been rebuilt and the tyres are on. Went to put them on last night and here is where the trouble started. The fronts went on perfectly with the 15mm hub centric spacers and spigot rings and they don't rub on the suspension or have any contact when on full lock.

The backs though do not fit over the drum brakes :( Basically the spacers have a chamfered edge on the inside that is slightly smaller than the 57.1 required to fit the hub properly which means it leaves a 3mm gap. I thought it wouldn't be a problem as I would just return 2 of the spacers and get 20mm ones instead which would solve the problem but they don't do ones in that size with a 4x100 pcd :(

I don't want to file the hub down but was wondering if I could put a 5mm spacer on the wheel, then the hub centric  spacer and then the wheel? I know it's an ugly solution but the bolts I have will easily fit as they are 45mm thread length-just wondering if it's going to cause other issues??

Hi mate not sure about fitting two spacers on top of each other.

I'm sure you can buy 20mm ones, have you spoke to Classic -vw aka Mark Carter?

I had the exact same happen to my 20mm wheel spacers from demon tweeks, think they're just a terrible design. However i emailed them and they sent another one out the next day. But they're definitely not the right fit for a mk1 rear drum like they say on the site!

I fitted 10mm of stub axle spacers on mine which was enough to correct the offset on my bbs rs. They are et25. I didn't need to fit a hubcentric spacer then. You could try 10 mm of stub axle spacers and a thinner non hubcentric ring hopefully leaving you enough spigot on the drum to locate wheels centrally perhaps?
I had to adjust the had brake after as the movement of the hubs stretched the cable pulling the brakes on slightly
