Top end rattle

Anyone know if the 1.8 carb engine has a common fault causing a top end rattle from tappets ???

Car has had a new oil pump and fresh oil and filter. Fault does seem intermittent and more so when the engine is not quite hot.

Oh and I used semi synthetic 10w40

Any advice appreciated

what filter did you put on it? the cheaper ones lack an internal non-return valve which stops the tappets loosing oil. buy a genuine mann/vw one and that should sort it

I got the one from Vw heritage, thought it should be good as it was a bit more expensive than a Mann one from GSF !!!

I would have thought the heritage one would have the correct valve in, but let us know how you get on! at least the oil will be really clean when you're done
