Not from rocker breather, it's from cool pack

Hi there people, I had a previous post going regarding a loud buzzing noise from the rocker breather pipe, I have now officially traced the noise to the coil pack! Does this mean it on the way out or is it a different problem that's causing the coil pack to make the noise?

Thanks for any replies

Hi again, I've replaced the cool today and it's still making the noise! Hasn't anyone a clue what this could possibly be? Could my alternator be sending too much leccy to the coil or something like that? Thanks for any info

Is it definitely the coil making the noise?

I guess it's quite loud then; does the engine run and you can hear it over the engine noise?

I'm pretty sure it's coming from the coil, 99% sure, the sound gets less with load on it but as soon as let off it goes dead loud again! And yea can easily hear it over the engine

got a long screw driver?

place the sharp end on the coil and the handle against your ear.  then do the same on all the bits round the coil that aren't going to give you a jolt.  that should tell you exactly whats making the noise.

as to much juice from the alternator. no. simple that.

My brother has a stethoscope but is away til tomorrow night, so will give that a try! So a funny but not so amusing thing happened today….I got in the car this morning to go to work and it didnt make the buzzing sound at all :) and on the way home :) then went to the next town along(10 mins) and by the time I have reached my destination it is buzzing again :( I was proper happy this morning driving my normal car again but then the day turned sour when I was driving a 'kettle' about once again lol :s

It's not the oil pressure buzzer inside the dash is it? Buzzing when the oil is hot and thin maybe; it has been cooler weather today so may have stayed thick for longer.

How can I tell for sure if it is this oil pressure buzzer? It does sound like its coming from the dash when ur in the car but does sound louder with the bonnet up! But come to think of it, it did start when I had been driving for a while on a hot day and I thought it was maybe something that had got got but couldn't find any leaks or owt so was unsure! This warning buzzer has chucked another theory into the mix :s

From memory:

the oil pressure warning buzzer should activate if the oil pressure fails to reach 2 bar at 2000rpm.
So, if you turn on the ignition you shouldn't get a buzzer, if you start the engine and leave it at idle you shouldn't get a buzzer,
if you then raise the engine speed until you pass 2000rpm the buzzer would sound (assuming the oil pressure was low) and then stay on when returned to idle. When you switch the ignition off and then back on the sequence should be the same ie buzzer off until over 2000rpm.

If the buzzer is being activated it could be;
1. Low oil pressure caused by thin oil, worn oil pump or blocked oil pick up
2. Oil pressure switch faulty
3. Oil pressure switch wiring faulty (this is what caused my problems)
4. L-shaped circuit board in the dash faulty

I don't think all models had the oil pressure buzzer so it may be that none of this is relevant to your particular vehicle.
If you are able to check the oil pressure that would be a good start; at least you would know that you're not going to do any damage by ignoring the buzzer (if it is actually the buzzer you can hear of course).

Have you ever had the dash apart? There would be an L-shaped circuit board on the back of the clocks; it has a small buzzer on it (looks like a small relay).

Sorry I've been well busy this weekend! Right, I don't think it sounds like it is the oil pressure buzzer as it sound louder under the bonnet rather than in the car which is where it would be louder if it was the buzzer I imagine? I went to work in it again yesterday and it didnt buzz on way there or way home at all but then haven't used it since! When it makes the noise it makes the noise on tick over aswel, it's at it's loudest when ticking over and gets quieter when load is on! It's only been starting after a longer drive about

Right after a few days of messing about, I've solved the whistle/buzzing noise! After my last post it just started to do it all the time to my grey annoyance! It turn out that the thread on the carb base adapter at the back right has totally gone, well there's like one tiny little thread, god knows how it held itself on! Anyway this had obviously come loose a lil bit from the base and letting that slight bit of air in to make the horrible whistling noise! Swear I had a spare base plate too but can't find it :( so bought and fitte a new coil for no reason, starts abit better though so not a total loss lol! And I've now got a spare Bosch coil in my slowly-growing stick of spares lol! Hope this could help someone solve any similar problems they are having
